Making Health Public PDF
By:Charles L. Briggs,Daniel C. Hallin
Published on 2016-05-20 by Routledge

This book examines the relationship between media and medicine, considering the fundamental role of news coverage in constructing wider cultural understandings of health and disease. The authors advance the notion of ‘biomediatization’ and demonstrate how health knowledge is co-produced through connections between dispersed sites and forms of expertise. The chapters offer an innovative combination of media content analysis and ethnographic data on the production and circulation of health news, drawing on work with journalists, clinicians, health officials, medical researchers, marketers, and audiences. The volume provides students and scholars with unique insight into the significance and complexity of what health news does and how it is created.

Sorting Out the New South City PDF
By:Thomas W. Hanchett
Published on 2017-10-06 by Univ of North Carolina Press

One of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the South, Charlotte, North Carolina, came of age in the New South decades of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, transforming itself from a rural courthouse village to the trading and financial hub of America's premier textile manufacturing region. In this book, Thomas Hanchett traces the city's spatial evolution over the course of a century, exploring the interplay of national trends and local forces that shaped Charlotte, and, by extension, other New South urban centers. Hanchett argues that racial and economic segregation are not age-old givens, but products of a decades-long process. Well after the Civil War, Charlotte's whites and blacks, workers and business owners, all lived intermingled in a |salt-and-pepper| pattern. The rise of large manufacturing enterprises in the 1880s and 1890s brought social and political upheaval, however, and the city began to sort out into a |checkerboard| of distinct neighborhoods segregated by both race and class. When urban renewal and other federal funds became available in the mid- twentieth century, local leaders used the money to complete the sorting out process, creating a |sector| pattern in which wealthy whites increasingly lived on one side of town and blacks on the other.

The Second Half Of The Twentieth Century Has Witnessed A Marked Shift Of Population From Rural To Urban Areas. This Accelerated Rate In The Growth Of Urban Population Is A Necessary Consequence Of Modernization And Industrialization To Which We Are Committed. The Rice Of Urban Centres Of Population, If Not Properly Controlled, Is Bound To Be Haphazard And To Lead To Growth Of Slums. The Administration Of These Urban Areas, Which Generally Is, Or Should Be, The Responsibility Of Local Bodies, Is An Important Part Of The Administration Of The State. As A Matter Of Fact, The Quality Of Urban Administration Affects Urban Dwellers More Immediately And Closely Than The Administration At Higher Levels. This Is Because Subjects Like Health, Sanitation, Slum Clearance, Housing, Education, Etc., Have A Direct Bearing On The Welfare Of The People.Urban India Has Attracted The Attention Of Town Planners, Architects, Traffic Experts, Scientists, Sociologists As Well As Social Scientists. But The Area That Has Received The Least Attention And The One That Has Remained Largely Unexplored Are The Ones Relating To The Problem Of The Agency For Urban Planning And Development. It Is Time The Political Scientists And Students Of Public Administration Closely Study The Structure And Suitability Of The Agency For Urban Planning And Development, And Suggest Ways And Means For Streamlining It Specially In The Context Of The Problems And Challenges That Urban Government Is Called Upon To Tackle. The Need To Comprehend And Synthesize The Analysis And Interpretation Of Basic Facts And Forces Relating To Urban Improvement Gains Fresh Urgency. The Present Study Accomplishes This Task By Providing A Bold, Balanced And Imaginative Approach To Meeting The Greatest Challenge Of Urban India. Based On Empirical Data, It Examines The Suitability Of Improvement Trusts In The Field Of Urban Development, Their Administrative Set-Up, Working And Planning, The Execution Process And The Problem Of Finance. The Study Is Intended For Policy Makers, Administrators, Teachers And Students Who Are Concerned With Problems Of Urban Planning And Development. The Author Intends To Focus Attention On Urban Issues And Provides Material For Independent Research And Guidelines For Policy Formulation On Complex Problems Of Urban India.

Streets PDF

Published on 1996-10-07 by Univ of California Press

This collection of twenty-one essays, written by colleagues and former students of the architectural historian Spiro Kostof (1936-1991), presents case studies on Kostof's model of urban forms and fabrics. The essays are remarkably diverse: the range includes pre-Columbian Inca settlements, fourteenth-century Cairo, nineteenth-century New Orleans, and twentieth-century Tokyo ... The theme of the volume is that the street presents itself as the basic structuring device of a city's form and also as the locus of its civilization. Each essay is a detailed investigation of a single urban street with unique historical conditions. The authors' shared concern regarding anthropological, political, and technical aspects of street making coalesce into a critical discourse on urban space.

Science museums are in the business of making science accessible to the public a public constantly bombarded with new information and research results. How the public understands this information will affect what they expect and take away from a museum's exhibits and programs. Creating Connections looks at the public understanding of research (PUR) and how it affects what science museums do. What are the opportunities and critical issues in PUR? What strategies are working and what are some pitfalls? What can be learned from the media's experiences with PUR? Creating Connections will be an invaluable resource for science museum professionals who want to guide their institutions and their visitors toward a new understanding of and appreciation for current research.|

Real Estate and Urban Development in South America PDF
By:Claudia Murray,Eliane Monetti,Camilla Ween
Published on 2017-12-14 by Routledge

Real Estate and Urban Development in South America uncovers how investors are navigating South American real estate markets in commercial, residential and infrastructure development. A preferred location for real estate development during the colonial era, in recent decades South America has been seen as high-risk for global real estate investors. This book explores the strengths and weaknesses of real estate markets in the region, concluding that with careful implementation of the correct development strategies, the region can once again take its place at the centre stage of global real estate investment. Comparing the economics and market maturity of South American countries in turn, the authors draw out the particular contexts in which investors and developers operate in mature and emerging markets. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, analysis of local development policies, legislation, valuation methods and taxation is supplemented with case studies from key players in the region’s major cities. The first full overview of real estate markets in South America, this book will be an essential guide for investors, policy makers, academics and students with an interest in this this rapidly evolving region.

Thank You, Comrade Stalin! PDF
By:Jeffrey Brooks
Published on 2000 by Princeton University Press

Thank you, our Stalin, for a happy childhood.| |Thank you, dear Marshal [Stalin], for our freedom, for our children's happiness, for life.| Between the Russian Revolution and the Cold War, Soviet public culture was so dominated by the power of the state that slogans like these appeared routinely in newspapers, on posters, and in government proclamations. In this penetrating historical study, Jeffrey Brooks draws on years of research into the most influential and widely circulated Russian newspapers--including Pravda, Isvestiia, and the army paper Red Star--to explain the origins, the nature, and the effects of this unrelenting idealization of the state, the Communist Party, and the leader. Brooks shows how, beginning with Lenin, the Communists established a state monopoly of the media that absorbed literature, art, and science into a stylized and ritualistic public culture--a form of political performance that became its own reality and excluded other forms of public reflection. He presents and explains scores of self-congratulatory newspaper articles, including tales of Stalin's supposed achievements and virtue, accounts of the country's allegedly dynamic economy, and warnings about the decadence and cruelty of the capitalist West. Brooks pays particular attention to the role of the press in the reconstruction of the Soviet cultural system to meet the Nazi threat during World War II and in the transformation of national identity from its early revolutionary internationalism to the ideology of the Cold War. He concludes that the country's one-sided public discourse and the pervasive idea that citizens owed the leader gratitude for the |gifts| of goods and services led ultimately to the inability of late Soviet Communism to diagnose its own ills, prepare alternative policies, and adjust to new realities. The first historical work to explore the close relationship between language and the implementation of the Stalinist-Leninist program, Thank You, Comrade Stalin! is a compelling account of Soviet public culture as reflected through the country's press.
